WISE Employment celebrated Harmony Day on Monday 21 March, with a breakfast event at the Mt Druitt office. The event was launched with an Acknowledgement of Country, a spiritual Samoan welcome and a Maori Ha-Ka. Harmony Day encourages all Australians to celebrate cultural diversity and the continuing message is Everyone Belongs meaning all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background

A number of Mt Druitt services came together, including Multicultural community groups, Aboriginal and Community representatives from Centrelink and support groups such as BEAT (Blacktown Early Access Team), Blacktown Mental Health, Community Resource Network, The WASH House and the Department of Housing.

Staff dressed in traditional dress depicting their cultures – Australian, Samoan, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Scottish, Maori, Turkish and Phillipino.

It was a also a special celebration for WISE Employment client, Wasmi who recently secured employment with local employer, ATA Fleet Repairer Group Sharon Howard is an Employer Liaison Officer at WISE Employment and believes that Harmony Day is an important event on the calendar as it gives people the opportunity to celebrate what makes each Australian unique and share what we have in common.

“We are so excited for Wasmi,” explains Sharon.” We have been working with him for a number of months, helping him to complete an English course, gain his drivers’ license and search for employment.”

“Wasmi has a qualification as a car mechanic in Iraq and was very keen to stay in the industry, but his qualifications aren’t recognised in Australia.” “ATA Fleet is a very supportive employer and is committed to helping Wasmi settle into his new job.”

“Now that Wasmi has secured employment, Harmony Day celebrations were all the more worthwhile for him and for us,” says Sharon.
