Victoria’s first not-for-profit electrical contractor in Northcote!
Local Northcote business, GBE Electrical, has become the first electrical contractor in Victoria to acquire not-for-profit status.
GBE is a WISE Employment Social Enterprise that provides high quality electrical contractor services, while also providing training and support for new apprentices.
Along with Clean Force Property Services, Incito Maintenance and Equity Labour Services, GBE Electrical is now WISE Employment’s fourth social enterprise.
Each delivers a quality commercial service, while providing genuine employment and training for some of the most disadvantaged people in the community.
GBE Manager, Jared Welsh believes that their point of difference is their focus on training apprentices and providing a supportive learning environment.
“At GBE, we employ one apprentice for every ‘A’ Grade electrician” says Jared.
“We make sure that our apprentices get the best possible opportunity to build a career in the electrical industry, regardless of their background,” he says.
“This includes making sure they are actively involved in many different areas of the trade and providing financial help with achieving their certification.”
“By working for both domestic and business customers, our apprentices have the opportunity to deliver a wide range of services and learn as much as they can about the industry.”
Keegan Rudge, a second year apprentice at GBE recognises the difference working at GBE as a not-for-profit.
“GBE gives me the chance to work in many more areas than other apprentices that I know,” explains Keegan.
“It also makes it easier for me because they pay my school fees and support me every step of the way.”
Jared agrees with these sentiments and says that customers “like the fact that GBE provides a quality service while supporting the next generation of tradies.”
“We win contracts because we compete favourably on price and consistently provide a high quality of service,” he says. “But in addition, our customers know that any surplus revenue is reinvested in the business to provide more employment and training opportunities,” says Jared.
“In a time of skills shortages, our customers are getting a quality service and at the same time helping to build the skills for the next generation of Australian electrical trades people.”
