Empowerment through employment

Working in prisons in New South Wales

WISE Employment NSW has been volunteering their time and skills to women in the Dilwynia prison in Windsor. WISE has been providing training sessions to many of the women who are about to be released. While the women receive general training about goal setting and job seeking from Dilwynia prison, WISE has been able to provide workshops once a week that are specifically focussed on employment issues.

Employment consultant, Diane Montoya, believes the training ‘fills in the gaps’ that may not be covered in their general training.

“We educate them on their rights in the workplace and discuss the potential stigma of having a criminal record,” Diane said.

“We also talk about the type of work they would like to do when they are released, and how to develop their resume so that it reflects their strengths and skills.”

Many of the women are also dealing with drug and alcohol addictions that may be a barrier to them finding work and becoming part of the community again. Employment Consultant, Maria Cacares, believes that many of the women don’t realise that they can access a service like WISE Employment when they are released.

“We educate them about what a disability is, and how we can help,” Maria said.

“Everybody needs a chance to start their life anew and to live their lives independently.”
