Discovering your dream job
Stephany wants to be a receptionist or work with deaf people.
Darlene wants to work in a factory.
Dean wants to wants to work with shampoo.
Phil wants to work with kids in wheelchairs.
And Mark, well Mark wants to work in a shop or become a professional actor. .
They all have different aspirations but they do share the same dream – to get a job.
.
They are all part of WISE Employment’s pilot program called Skills2Work. It is a six month program for young people with a disability. The program takes participants through a series of general vocational and lifestyle modules including retail, hospitality, business and warehousing.
.
What is different about the program is that is combines training in the classroom with real experience in real workplaces.
.
WISE Learning and Development Services’ training consultant, Vicki Uili, believes the program is different because it gives young people with a disability the chance to trial different types of jobs over the course of the program.
.
“Often many young people don’t know what they would like to do, so this program helps expose them to a lot of different options – there’s no pressure to take a job,” she said.
.
“Many of our participants may have been unsuccessful in finding or maintaining employment in the past.”
.
“Skills2Work helps them to develop real skills in a real workplace.”
.
The Skills2Work program funded by the Department of Human Services, Victoria, is being run at WISE Employment’s Frankston office on Level 2, Landmark Corporate Building, 454 Nepean Highway, Frankston.
