Working Out…a program for job seekers with criminal record
Many people with criminal records re-offend because they can’t find work. The Sentencing Advisory Council shows that in 2004/2005, 38.2% of Victoria’s prisoners returned to prison within two years of release, and 46% of Victoria’s prisoners returned to corrective services within two years (http://www.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au - accessed on 17/08/06).
WISE Employment's Team Leader, Janice Miller, believes that there are many reasons why people may re-offend and end up back inside. "We also know that there are other social and health issues that can contribute," she said.
The Working Out program, based at WISE Employment's Richmond office, is a program designed to break that cycle and help ex-offenders to find lasting employment by assisting in addressing their barriers. Janice says that anyone with a record whether they've spent time in prison or not, is eligible for assistance through the Working Out program. "The program offers cost-free assistance that is tailored to each job seeker's specific skills and needs," she said.
