Sponsoring people with a disability to find work in the media
Job seekers with a disability can often face a double challenge when looking for work. As well as preparing for their job search and then finding an appropriate vacant position, they may have to confront a range of biases or pre-conceptions that a potential employer may have about their disability.
Challenging these pre-conceptions is no small feat in today’s world. With approximately 20% of the population identifying as having a disability, they are often well under-represented in today’s media.
Disability Media, a not for profit organisation, aims to remedy that situation by producing media with, for and by people with disabilities. WISE Employment is proud to be sponsoring Disability Media’s flagship community television program “No Limits”. Broadcast on Channel 31 in Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney, ‘No Limits’ aims to increase the participation of people with disability in broadcast television production. Covering a wide range of stories from the disability sector, ‘No Limits’ has generated discussion about issues that impact on people with a disability but are rarely covered by mainstream media.
Disability Media’s Executive Director, Erin McCuskey, believes that by producing media including television, video, film, print and radio, we can allow Australians to see disability as a natural part of life.
“Disability Media Inc has been developed in response in the paucity of presence in the Australian media of people with disabilities,” she said.
“Our program ‘No Limits’ is a project that aims to bring the world of disability into people’s living rooms in an informative and entertaining way.”
