Make It Work wins national Crime and Violence Prevention Award
WISE Employment is proud to be chosen as one of the national winners of the Australian Institute of Criminology’s Australian Crime and Prevention Awards for the Make It Work (MIW) programme.
MIW is a specialist employment and mentoring programme for people on bail.
The awards are sponsored by the heads of Australian governments and members of the Australasian Police Ministers' Council as a joint Australian Government, state and territory initiative. The awards recognise good practice in the prevention or reduction of violence and other types of crime in Australia.
David Christian, from WISE Employment, believes that many offenders face educational and vocational barriers that make it difficult for them to re-enter the workforce.
“The ‘Make it Work’ programme prepares offenders to re-enter the work force,” he said.
“Participants of the program also have access to a community volunteer mentor who supports the participant to develop their social skills.”
A three year evaluation of the program conducted by Deakin University revealed that ‘Make it Work’ has performed impressively compared to other similar national and international programs.
“Through the program, we work with participants to learn skills to find a job but also tools to keep them away from a life of crime,” David said.
“Without targeted assistance many repeat offenders will be unable to overcome their difficulties and they cycle through the criminal justice system at risk of doing a life time in prison by instalments.”
“This pattern of recidivism results in social and economic costs for themselves and the community.”
