Turning Night into Day
The Koorie Night Market moved from night into day for a special NAIDOC week market on Sunday 5 July.
The Market was held on Sunday, the start of NAIDOC Week, which celebrates the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Koorie Night Market stall holder Sandy Myers had her usual stall in the market, which had all of its great food, entertainment and genuine hand made Koorie products.
Sandy has been a stallholder since the market first began in March 2008.
“I started doing this to earn a little pocket money, I’ve been working on my stuff ever since.”
Sandy sells handicrafts and therapeutic oils. “I have scarves, beanies, tote bags, lavender that I grow and process myself in little gift bags, they’re all handmade handicrafts.”
Making her items to sell keeps Sandy busy between markets.
“It gives me something to do, most of the things I can do at home, I have arthritis and I’m partially handicapped so it’s therapeutic for me.”
Just like Sandy’s items all products for sale at the markets are hand made by the stall holders and are genuine Koorie items. In classic and contemporary forms they help represent the Koorie culture, as made by Indigenous people.
WISE Employment is a major partner of the Koorie Night Market, providing funding to support two part-time Market Coordinators through the WISE Community Investment Division.
WISE is proud to support the markets as they help showcase Indigenous talent with the hope of helping stall holders build their hobbies into small businesses.
Other project partners include Darebin Council, DATSICC, Darebin Enterprise Centre Ltd and stallholders.
If you missed this market the next Koorie Night Markets will be at Northcote Town Hall on Wednesday 25 November from 6pm - 9.30pm and Saturday 5 December from 4pm to 8.30pm.
