How to find your first job
When you are young and looking for your first job, it can seem like a daunting task.
What type of job do you want? What type of job will suit you? And what will your employer expect of you?
WISE Employment Werribee Site Manager, Rhonda Craig, says these were common questions from the 1000s of students in years 10, 11 and 12 that visited the WISE stand at this years Werribee River Careers Association (WRICA) expo on 11 and 12 May.
“Young job seekers face the challenge of having little or no experience,” Rhonda said.
“And if they are looking for their first job, they may not have a clear understanding of what is expected of them in the workplace.”
| Rhonda’s tips for young job seekers looking for their first job: |
| • |
Clerical and administrative – you may be interested in writing reports and letters organising, recording and checking information. |
| • |
Outdoor work – you may wish to work as a gardener, labourer or construction worker |
| • |
Cleaner – clean jobs can be found in a range of areas including workplaces and residential homes and can be quite flexible. |
| • |
Traineeships and Apprenticeships – these are found in many industries and remember they are open to all age groups |
| • |
Community Services – this could include child care workers and personal attendants |
| • |
Service Industry – positions in retail and hospitality usually suit people that like working as part of a team. |
Rhonda stresses that what young job seekers may lack in experience, they have in enthusiasm and energy.
“Employers don’t always need experience, but they do want someone with a great attitude and initiative,” she said.
“If you’ve got a great personality that can go a long way towards getting the job.”
