Empowerment through employment

Gaining employment through innovative community partnership

WISE Employment Tasmania has developed a new innovative community partnership that will assist local job seekers with a disability into employment – the first of its kind in Tasmania.

The WISE/Hollows Charity Auction is an initiative that provides multiple benefits – to the job seeker, the employer and to the charity. Employers from around Tasmania attended the auction on Thursday, 1 February at the Devonport Football Club. Local businesses had donated more than 90 items for the auction which raised a total of $5835 for The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Eligible employers who employed a job seeker from any of the WISE Employment Tasmania offices in Devonport, Launceston or Hobart also went into the draw to win a trip to the Northern Territory to visit the local communities that are assisted by the Foundation.

The winner was Kim Robinson from Advantage Sports and Event Management in Devonport. Kim had employed Sarah through the WISE Employment Devonport office.

“Sarah has been a tremendous asset to our business and she has fitted in well,” Kim said.

“She’s been developing a business database which is a tremendous bank of information for not only us but the entire Devonport community.”

Kim has never been to the Northern Territory before but has always wanted to go.

“I was never sure how I was going to get there married to a farmer,” she said.

“I’ve worked with other community groups through my business so it will be great to see first-hand the work that The Fred Hollows Foundation does in the Northern Territory.”

WISE Employment’s Devonport Marketing Coordinator and event organiser, Glenn Simonds, says the night was a big success.

“It was a top night,” he said.

“Congratulations to Kim - not only has she employed one of our clients but she has also helped us to find donations for last night’s event.”

“Kim is a very worthy winner and we hope she has a great time in the Northern Territory later this year.”

WISE Employment’s Devonport Marketing Coordinator and event organiser, Glenn Simonds, believes the partnership between the two organisations brings benefits to all parties.
