Developing new skills in horticulture
Equity Labour Services (ELS) employees in North West Tasmania are about to begin their training in Horticulture II.
ELS, a division of WISE Employment, is a vegetation management, litter collection and cleaning business with a difference.
ELS trains and finds work for people who – due to a range of disabilities – face barriers to gaining and retaining employment.
Troy Stone has been with ELS since 2003 after an accident at home saw him no longer be able to work as a farm hand. He hopes to complete four certificates in horticulture before finding full-time employment with a landscaping firm.
Rather than sitting in a classroom, the course will be delivered in a real life setting – no pens and paper allowed – to take into account the special needs of the participants.
ELS’s Manager, Harvey Gardner, believes that by investing in this training his employees will develop new skills that will benefit ELS and their job prospects in the future.
“Our employees like Troy are keen to learn, they just need the right environment,” he said.
“And it’s great to be able to give back to the employees who have helped us since our beginnings in 1999 to become a state-wide operation in Tasmania with offices in Ulverstone, Launceston and Hobart.”
