The Koorie Night Market was established through the Darebin Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Community Council (DATSICC) and is facilitated through Darebin City Council in Melbourne. In 2009, we provided funding for two part-time Market Coordinators to manage the logistics of the market and assist stall holders to learn about pricing, merchandising, marketing, promotions, tax and taxation
requirements, legal structures, small business law and financial management for small business.
Since the completion of a pilot project in March 2008, the Darebin Council has worked to lay the foundations for the long-term sustainability of the markets. A new organisation, Koorie Night Market Incorporated, was formed to oversee the markets. The project aims to improve the economic and social standing of up to 100 Indigenous stall-holders, as well as positively impacting on the Indigenous community, general community and local business.
WISE has continued to support the Koorie Night Market and in 2010, provided $18,000 in funding for a part-time Project and Volunteer Coordinator and continues to serve on the Board of the Koorie Night Market Inc. .
Project partners include WISE Employment, Darebin Council, DATSICC, Darebin Enterprise Centre Ltd and stallholders.
