In 2010, WISE funded the establishment of the DiversityWISE program in Darwin, Northern Territory. DiversityWISE is a tailored, personalised employment program, providing employment support and training to Darwin’s refugee community. DiversityWISE assists participants to find and retain sustainable employment, by recognising and valuing a refugee’s previous skills and experience, while acknowledging the barriers that some refugees face in gaining employment in Australia.
An innovative feature of DiversityWISE is that it offers participants personal support through mentorship. In this way the program not only addresses barriers to employment, but also offers individual support at a personal level by providing a positive and beneficial relationship with a volunteer mentor. Support and encouragement from a mentor can help participants build their self confidence, gain a better understanding of Australian culture and create new opportunities for development.
A job, and potentially a career path for a refugee can make the difference between a life of disadvantage and reliance on the community and being a proud and productive community member.
